Recreational Use in Massachusetts
November 20, 2018, was a day gone down in history! This date is when Massachusetts started selling marijuana for recreational use (MA has been selling marijuana for medicinal use since 2013 after it was voted to be decriminalized in 2008). Having been the first state to criminalize marijuana in the past, this was a great turnaround for stoners in the New England area.
As of today, there are over 50 registered Marijuana Dispensaries in Massachusetts and over 59k active users. Unfortunately for MA, the sales tax on Marijuana is 10.75% which is in addition to the state sales tax of 6.25%; furthermore local taxes of up to 3% can be applied to sales as well, making marijuana use an expensive hobby for residents of the Bay State.
